- 2 ripe bananas
- 300ml - ice cold milk, (or half natural yoghurt)
- 2 tbsp porridge oats - (not jumbo ones)
- 2 ice cubes
These banana and oat thickies are a fantastic, filling breakfast drink. I find them great as I often don’t fancy a bowl of cereal or toast in the mornings. The oats keep you full for most of the morning until lunchtime.
The kids love them too and they can do loads to help out – chopping, spooning and turning on the blender (with adult supervision of course). I’m up early and my youngest daughter likes to make sure she is up and dressed so she can help me make them.
The original recipe was from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s Channel 4 TV show, River Cottage Everyday. I don’t really follow the measurements and tend to put in what seems about right – obviously we make bigger batches than this for all of us.
- Put all ingredients into the blender
- Blitz until smooth
We add frozen fruit in the winter – strawberries or mixed berries, instead of the ice cubes – this adds lovely flavour and colour and the kids like it much more. We have also experimented with honey, blueberries and even a very small drop of vanilla essence, all of which help make a nice change.
You can also use flavoured yoghurts as this adds a nice flavour.
Let the kids drink them through a straw, they’ll love it – it’s like drinking a milkshake.
