We've already got a brown soda bread recipe on the site however our 8 year old daughter made this recipe recently and it was delicious. In our opinion you can't get enough bread baking recipes so here it is.
We love baking bread but sometimes don't have the time for all of the kneading and proving that yeast based bread needs. This is where soda bread comes in. From starting to bake to sitting down with this warm and delicious bread takes less than an hour so it's perfect for a teatime treat!
Quick and easy wholemeal brown soda bread - perfect for a teatime treat!

Pre-heat the oven to 200c
Put all of the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl and give a quick mix to combine
Add the buttermilk and treacle and mix to bring together into a dough
Give it a quick knead and divide into two
Flatten to rounds about 2 inches high and place on a lightly floured baking tray
Dust the rounds well with more flour and make a deep cut across the middle of each of them
Place them in the oven and bake for around 25 minutes. You know that they are done because when you tap the bottom of them they should sound hollow
Enjoy whilst still warm with a nice cup of tea!
Our daughter did everything - measuring, weighing, mixing, shaping and dusting. She got an immense sense of satisfaction out of baking it and loved the comments from her siblings as to how amazing it was. Everyone agreed it was much better than shop bought bread!
The differences between this and our other brown soda bread recipe is that this uses only wholemeal flour and adds treacle for a dark colour and slight sweetness.
Did you know you can make your own butter and buttermilk?
